Main Types Of Compression Testing Machines

Selecting the right model is the first step in purchasing equipment and requires a comprehensive assessment based on the test materials, testing standards, budget, and long-term usage plans.

Classification by Drive Method

● Hydraulic Compression Testing Machines: These use hydraulic cylinders to provide the test force. Their characteristics include a wide force range, typically used for tests requiring extremely large tonnage (e.g., hundreds to thousands of tons), such as concrete components, large metal castings, and rocks. These machines are robust and can withstand high loads, but their measurement and control accuracy is generally lower than electronic models, and they are larger in size and require a hydraulic power source.

● Electronic (Servo Motor Driven) Compression Testing Machines: These use a servo motor to drive a crossbeam via a precision ball screw to apply force. Their characteristics include high control accuracy, a wide speed range, low noise, and cleanliness. They are suitable for applications requiring high precision and speed control, such as testing the compressibility of metals, plastics, composite materials, and ceramics. The tonnage range is from a few Newtons to hundreds of Newtons, with high-tonnage models reaching hundreds of kilonewtons.

Classification by Control Method

● Digital Display Type: Early or basic equipment, typically using digital tubes or simple LCD screens to display force and displacement values. Control functions are relatively simple, and data processing capabilities are weak.

● Microcomputer Control Type: The current mainstream configuration. It uses a computer and dedicated measurement and control software for fully automatic control, data acquisition, curve plotting, and report generation. The software is powerful, allowing for preset test standards, customized test procedures, and convenient data management and analysis, greatly improving testing efficiency and standardization.

Classification by Structural Form

● Gantry Type: This is the most common structure, divided into single-column (C-type) and double-column (gantry type). Single-column structures are compact, occupy little space, and are suitable for lower tonnage and smaller specimens. Double-column gantry structures have good rigidity and high stability, suitable for medium to high tonnage tests and tests with strict coaxiality requirements.

● Four-column Structure: Primarily used in ultra-large tonnage hydraulic testing machines, such as specialized compression testing machines for cement concrete blocks and large structural components. Its characteristics include a large space between the upper and lower pressure plates and strong load-bearing capacity.
